GDBUtil Configuration

The configuration of GDBUtil is probably the most complicated thing with this application.

All configuration files are located in the config folder in the installation directory.

There is one file to configure the database connections called gdbutil.rdbms. The database connections define the visible root nodes of the tree view.  There are one or more files to configure the branches of the root nodes. Those files end with .gdbutil.

To simplify the configuration new EMF generated editors are provided beginning with version 0.0.6.0. The editors are located in a new perspective. The perspectives can be switched using status line buttons (the easiest way to hide and show the buttons).

The configuration files should be edited using the new editors. The editors ensure that the structure of the files (gdbutil.rdbms and *.gdbutil) are valid and can be opened without errors. After changing the content of one of the configuration files the change has to be loaded. Therefore one can restart the application or simply use the "Reload configuration" menu entry. This menu entry is not accessible in the editor perspective. To reload the configuration all views and database connections will be closed.

The following editors are available:

The gdbutil.rdbms editor looks like this:

To modify the configuration please use the context menu. This way new child or sibling elements are created. Save and Save as... menu entries are provided.
After changing a configuration file the configuration has to be reloaded.

To create a new *.gdbutil file the following steps are nessessary:

  1. Use the rdbms editor to create new Connection Properties entry or change the key of a present one.
    2. Reload the configuration. (An error message in the log file indicates that the file key.gdbutil could not be found.)
    3. Choose the new file from the Tree definitions submenu.
    4. A wizard opens to create the file with the nessessary xml elements.
    5. Choose Ok to create the file.
    6. Now the new file can be edited.
